A friend of mine asked me yesterday what material I use for shooting portraits of newborn babies. I use a 2 squared meters black velvet, which you can buy from any textiles shop. There are many other different materials which you can use of course, others have also highly recommended black cotton as well.
When purchasing the black velvet, I also ensured that I selected the blackest and most matte velvet. This is so post production will be a breeze. I find that with cotton, you can still see the creases in the photo and then post production will take you that little bit longer ;-) Of course, this is just my personal preference.
My favourite lighting indoor is natural light... So I prefer shooting near big windows or doors. The photo below is using black velvet and natural light from the window.
